Rangehoods
Rangehoods for Australian Kitchens
A rangehood is an essential part of any kitchen, removing cooking smoke, steam, grease, and odours from the air before they settle on surfaces and affect the air quality in your home. At Everyday Home Living, we stock a wide range of rangehoods across every style and installation type from trusted brands, with fast delivery across Australia. Browse by type below to find the right match for your kitchen.
Types of Rangehoods
Canopy Rangehoods
Canopy rangehoods are mounted on the wall above the cooktop and make a visual feature of the ventilation system. They are available in a range of widths to match 60cm and 90cm cooktops and suit both contemporary and traditional kitchen styles. Canopy rangehoods typically offer strong extraction performance due to their large capture area and distance above the cooktop. They are one of the most effective rangehood types for managing the heavy smoke and steam produced by gas cooking and high-heat wok cooking.
Slideout Rangehoods
Slideout rangehoods are installed under an overhead kitchen cabinet and feature a telescoping section that pulls out over the cooktop when in use. When retracted, they are virtually invisible, making them a popular choice in kitchens where a discreet appearance is important. They are a practical option for rental properties and existing kitchens where a canopy rangehood installation is not feasible. Slideout models are generally suited to light to moderate cooking use.
Undermount Rangehoods
Undermount rangehoods (also called undercupboard or concealed rangehoods) are installed inside the overhead cabinet, with only the extraction grille visible below the cabinet base. The motor, filters, and ducting are fully concealed, giving the kitchen a very clean and seamless appearance. They are a popular choice in modern Australian kitchen designs where a sleek aesthetic is the priority.
Ducted vs Recirculating Rangehoods
Rangehoods can be installed as ducted (vented to outside) or recirculating (filterless extraction within the kitchen) systems. Ducted installation vents cooking air outside the home and is the more effective option for managing odours and moisture. Recirculating models filter the air through charcoal filters and return it to the kitchen, making them suitable for apartments or kitchens where external ducting is not possible. If you have the option, a ducted installation is always preferred for cooking performance and moisture management in the Australian climate.
Sizing Your Rangehood
As a general rule, your rangehood should be at least as wide as your cooktop, and ideally 100mm wider on each side to improve capture efficiency. For a 60cm cooktop, a 60cm rangehood is the minimum and a 90cm model will perform better. For a 90cm cooktop, a 90cm rangehood is standard. The extraction capacity (measured in cubic metres per hour, or m3/h) should be matched to your kitchen volume and cooking intensity. For most Australian home kitchens, 600 to 900 m3/h is a practical range. For heavy cooking or large open-plan kitchens, look for 900 m3/h and above.
Installation Height
The recommended installation height for a rangehood above a cooktop is typically 650mm to 750mm for electric cooktops and 750mm to 900mm for gas cooktops. Check your rangehood and cooktop manufacturer's guidelines for the specific recommended clearances, as these vary between models and non-compliance can affect warranty and safety.

Frequently Asked Questions
What type of rangehood is best for my kitchen?
The best rangehood type depends on your kitchen layout and aesthetic preference. Canopy rangehoods offer the strongest performance and make a design statement. Slideout rangehoods are discreet and suit kitchens where space or aesthetics call for a low-profile solution. Undermount rangehoods are fully concealed and suit modern integrated kitchen designs. For gas cooking or high-heat cooking styles, a canopy or undermount rangehood with higher extraction capacity is the better choice over a slideout model.
What extraction capacity do I need?
Extraction capacity is measured in cubic metres per hour (m3/h). For most Australian home kitchens with moderate cooking, 600 to 700 m3/h is adequate. For kitchens with gas cooktops, high-heat cooking, or larger open-plan spaces, 800 to 1,000 m3/h is more appropriate. The general formula is to calculate your kitchen volume (length x width x ceiling height in metres) and multiply by 10 to get the minimum recommended extraction rate. A rangehood that is slightly oversized for the space is always better than one that is undersized.
Ducted or recirculating: which is better?
Ducted rangehoods vent air to the outside and are significantly more effective at removing moisture, grease particles, and cooking odours from the kitchen. Recirculating models pass air through charcoal and grease filters and return it to the kitchen, which removes some odour but does not remove moisture or heat. In Australian homes where external ducting is possible, a ducted installation is strongly preferred. Recirculating is a practical option for apartments or kitchens where external ducting cannot be installed. Charcoal filters in recirculating models need to be replaced every 3 to 6 months depending on cooking frequency.
How high should a rangehood be above the cooktop?
The recommended height is 650mm to 750mm above an electric or induction cooktop, and 750mm to 900mm above a gas cooktop. Gas flames produce more heat and require greater clearance for safety and effective capture. Always check the specific requirements in your rangehood and cooktop installation manuals as these vary between brands and models. Non-compliance with installation height requirements can affect warranty and safety certification.
Do rangehoods come with an Australian warranty?
Yes. All rangehoods at Everyday Home Living include the manufacturer's Australian warranty. You are also protected under the Australian Consumer Law, which provides statutory guarantees on product quality and fitness for purpose in addition to the manufacturer warranty. Contact our team if you need help with a warranty claim, installation query, or advice on choosing the right rangehood for your kitchen.
