Types of Kettles

Standard Fast-Boil Kettles

Standard electric kettles are the most common choice in Australian homes. Most modern 1.7 litre models boil a full load in around 3 to 4 minutes at 2,400 watts. For everyday black tea, instant coffee, and cooking use, a standard fast-boil kettle is all you need. They are available in a wide range of colours and finishes to suit kitchen aesthetics, from classic stainless steel to matte black and contemporary pastels.

Temperature Control Kettles

Temperature control kettles allow you to select a specific water temperature rather than boiling to 100 degrees Celsius. This is important for certain types of tea and coffee that require water below boiling point for optimal results. Green tea is best brewed at 70 to 80 degrees Celsius as boiling water makes it bitter. White tea and some delicate herbal teas suit 65 to 75 degrees Celsius. Pour-over and filter coffee extracts best at 90 to 96 degrees Celsius. For anyone who takes their hot drinks seriously, a temperature control kettle is a worthwhile investment.

Keep Warm Kettles

Keep warm kettles maintain the water at the selected temperature for a set period after boiling, typically 20 to 30 minutes. This is useful for households where multiple people make drinks at different times and you want to avoid re-boiling the kettle repeatedly.

Key Features to Look For

Capacity

Standard kettles hold 1.5 to 1.7 litres, which boils enough water for 6 to 8 cups. For smaller households, a 1 to 1.2 litre model boils faster and wastes less energy on smaller amounts. For households that regularly make large amounts of hot drinks or use the kettle for cooking, 1.7 litres is the practical maximum for most residential models.

Wattage

Higher wattage means faster boiling. Most Australian kettles are 2,400W, which is the standard for 240V household power and boils a full kettle quickly. Lower wattage models (1,800W and below) take longer to boil and suit travel or applications where the full power draw is not available.

360-Degree Base

A 360-degree cordless base allows you to pick up and replace the kettle from any angle, which is more convenient than a directional dock. Most modern kettles include this as standard.
