Key Things to Consider When Setting Up a Laundry
Space Planning
Measure your laundry space carefully before purchasing. Standard washing machines and dryers are 60 cm wide. Allow at least 2 to 3 cm clearance on each side for ventilation. If your laundry is very compact, consider a washer dryer combo or a front loader with a stacked dryer.
Stacking
A front load washing machine with a compatible dryer stacked on top saves significant floor space. A stacking kit (sold separately or included with some models) is required. Check compatibility before purchasing — not all dryers stack on all washing machines.
Water and Drainage
Washing machines and washer dryer combos require a cold water inlet and a drain outlet. Heat pump dryers can drain via a hose to a nearby floor waste or laundry tub, or collect condensate in a removable reservoir. Vented dryers require an external vent hose.
Electrical Requirements
Most washing machines and dryers connect to a standard 10-amp power outlet. Some high-capacity or commercial-grade models may require a 15-amp outlet. Confirm the requirements of your chosen model before purchasing.
Energy and Water Efficiency
Under the Australian Energy Rating and WELS schemes, look for the highest star ratings available within your budget. Front loaders consistently achieve better ratings than top loaders. Heat pump dryers achieve far better energy ratings than vented dryers.
