Built-in Double Ovens
Built-in Double Ovens for Australian Kitchens
A built-in double oven gives you two independent oven cavities in a single tower installation, allowing you to cook two dishes at completely different temperatures and functions simultaneously. For households that cook large meals, entertain regularly, or simply want the convenience of never waiting for one dish to finish before starting another, a double oven is a genuine upgrade. How Double Ovens Work
Built-in double ovens are installed in a tall cabinet tower with two separate oven cavities, one above the other. Each cavity operates completely independently with its own temperature control, cooking function, and timer. You can run a roast at high heat in the lower cavity while baking a cake at a lower temperature in the upper cavity, finishing both at the same time without any compromise in cooking conditions.
Upper vs Lower Cavity
In most double oven configurations, the upper cavity is smaller than the lower cavity. The upper cavity is positioned at a more ergonomic height for checking and accessing dishes. The lower larger cavity handles full roasts, multiple trays of baking, and large dishes. Some double oven models have equal-sized cavities, which maximises flexibility but requires a taller cabinet installation.
Key Features to Look For
Individual Cavity Capacity
Check the capacity of each cavity separately rather than the combined total. A common configuration is around 30 to 40 litres in the upper cavity and 60 to 70 litres in the lower. If you regularly cook large roasts or multiple trays simultaneously, prioritise the lower cavity capacity.
Cooking Functions Per Cavity
Both cavities should offer at minimum fan-forced, conventional, and grill functions. Some models have more functions in the main lower cavity than the secondary upper cavity. Check that the functions available in each cavity suit the way you cook. If you bake frequently, fan-forced in both cavities is important.
Pyrolytic Cleaning
Some double oven models include pyrolytic self-cleaning in one or both cavities. If cleaning convenience is a priority, look for a model with pyrolytic function in at least the main lower cavity.
Cabinet Requirements
Double ovens require a taller cabinet tower than a single oven. Standard double oven installation heights are typically around 88cm to 90cm, requiring a 900mm or taller cabinet opening. Confirm your cabinetry dimensions before purchasing and consult your cabinetmaker if planning a new kitchen.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are double ovens worth buying in Australia?
For households that cook large meals or entertain regularly, yes. The ability to run two independent cavities at different temperatures simultaneously is a practical advantage that saves time and effort. For a household that uses the oven only for simple everyday cooking, a well-specified single oven may be sufficient. Double ovens are best suited to households of four or more who cook from scratch regularly and value kitchen flexibility.
Can I install a double oven in an existing kitchen?
Yes, provided your existing cabinet tower has the required height opening. Standard double ovens need around 88 to 90cm of vertical cabinet space. If your existing kitchen has a single oven in a tower cabinet, it may be possible to replace it with a double oven if the cabinet is tall enough and the electrical supply is adequate. Consult a licensed electrician and cabinetmaker before purchasing to confirm your kitchen can accommodate the unit.
