Laser Projectors
Laser Projectors for Australian Homes
A laser projector delivers a genuinely cinema-scale image in your home, producing screens of 100 inches and above from a compact unit. For households that want a true home cinema experience without the fixed screen size constraint of a television, a laser projector is the most compelling option available. Browse our range at Everyday Home Living with fast delivery across Australia.
Laser vs Traditional Lamp Projectors
Traditional projectors use a lamp that dims over time and requires periodic replacement, typically every 2,000 to 4,000 hours. Laser projectors use a solid-state laser light source rated for 20,000 to 30,000 hours of use, which essentially means the light source lasts the lifetime of the projector under normal household use. Laser projectors also achieve full brightness instantly with no warm-up time, maintain consistent brightness throughout their lifespan, and offer a wider colour gamut than most lamp-based projectors.
Ultra Short Throw Laser Projectors
Ultra short throw (UST) laser projectors are designed to sit just a few centimetres from the wall or screen, projecting a 100-inch or larger image from a distance of 20 to 30cm. This makes them practical for most Australian living rooms without needing ceiling mounting or a long throw distance. A UST projector can sit on a media unit or low cabinet directly below the screen area, making installation straightforward. The image fills the wall in a way that no television can replicate, creating an immersive viewing experience for movies, sport, and gaming.
Key Features to Look For
Brightness
Projector brightness is measured in ANSI lumens. For a dedicated darkened home theatre room, 1,500 to 2,500 lumens is adequate. For a living room with some ambient light, 2,500 to 3,000 lumens and above gives you a watchable image with the lights dimmed. Laser projectors achieve their best picture quality in darkened or dim conditions; for rooms with significant ambient light, a high-brightness television remains the more practical everyday choice.
Resolution
4K resolution is now available on consumer laser projectors and delivers sharp, detailed images at large screen sizes. At 100 inches and above, the difference between 4K and Full HD is clearly visible. Look for 4K native or 4K enhanced resolution for the best image quality at large screen sizes.
Throw Ratio
The throw ratio determines how far the projector needs to be from the screen to achieve a given image size. Ultra short throw models have a throw ratio of around 0.25:1, meaning they can produce a 100-inch image from around 25cm. Standard and long throw projectors require several metres of distance to achieve a large image and are typically ceiling-mounted. For most Australian living room installations, an ultra short throw model is the most practical choice.
Audio
Many UST laser projectors include built-in speakers, but for the full cinematic experience, pairing with a soundbar or home theatre speaker system is strongly recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a laser projector be used in a bright room?
Laser projectors perform best in darkened or dim conditions. High-brightness models of 3,000 lumens and above can produce a watchable image with the curtains drawn and lights off, but they do not match the brightness of a modern QLED or ULED television in a room with ambient light. If your primary viewing environment is a bright living room, a high-brightness television is the more practical everyday choice. If you have the ability to dim or darken the room for movie viewing, a laser projector delivers an immersive experience that no TV can replicate at any price.
Do laser projectors need a screen?
A smooth, flat, light-coloured wall is sufficient for casual viewing and many households find a painted white wall delivers excellent results. A dedicated projection screen with an ambient light rejecting (ALR) or gain surface improves image quality, contrast, and brightness compared to a standard wall. For ultra short throw projectors, a UST-specific ALR screen is the best companion for optimal picture quality.
