Steam Irons for Australian Homes
A well-chosen steam iron removes wrinkles quickly and efficiently, producing the crisp, professional finish that a garment steamer alone cannot achieve on shirts, trousers, and formal garments. At Everyday Home Living, we stock a range of steam irons from compact everyday models to high-performance steam generator units, with fast delivery across Australia.
How Steam Irons Work
Steam irons use an internal water reservoir that heats water to produce steam. The steam is released through holes in the soleplate as the iron glides across the fabric, penetrating the fibres and relaxing them so the iron can press them flat. The combination of heat and moisture is significantly more effective at removing stubborn wrinkles than dry heat alone. A burst of steam function releases a powerful shot of extra steam for set-in creases and stubborn wrinkles on thicker fabrics.
Key Features to Look For
Soleplate Material
The soleplate is the base of the iron that contacts the fabric. Stainless steel soleplates are durable and glide smoothly on most fabrics. Non-stick and ceramic-coated soleplates reduce friction further and are less likely to cause shine marks on dark fabrics. Durilium and other hardened soleplate materials add extra scratch and wear resistance for long-term performance.
Steam Output
Steam output is measured in grams per minute (g/min). Higher steam output means faster and more effective wrinkle removal. For everyday home ironing, 30 to 45 g/min is adequate. For heavy fabrics like thick cotton, linen, and denim, 45 g/min and above produces noticeably better results. Steam generator irons typically produce 90 to 150 g/min, which is why they are so much faster on heavy laundry loads.
Water Tank Capacity
A larger water tank lets you iron for longer without stopping to refill. Most standard steam irons hold 200 to 400ml. If you regularly iron large loads in a single session, a model with a 350ml or larger tank reduces interruptions. Some models allow refilling during use, which is a practical convenience for extended ironing.
Temperature Control
Variable temperature control is essential for protecting different fabric types. Look for clearly marked fabric-specific settings that indicate the correct temperature for synthetics, silk, wool, and cotton. An auto shut-off function that activates after 8 to 10 minutes of inactivity on a flat surface is an important safety feature for home use.
