Bambu Lab AMS Lite — Product Spotlight
Share
The Bambu Lab AMS Lite is the entry-level automatic material system designed specifically for the A1 and A1 Mini printers. It connects directly to the printer and automates filament switching during a print, enabling up to four-colour output from a machine that would otherwise print in a single colour per job. For A-Series owners who want to move into multi-colour printing without upgrading their printer, the AMS Lite is the natural first step.
What the AMS Lite Does
The AMS Lite sits beside the printer and feeds filament through a PTFE tube to the toolhead. When a multi-colour print calls for a colour change, the AMS Lite retracts the current filament, loads the next one, and continues the print automatically. The process generates a small amount of purge material at each colour change, which is deposited into the printer's waste chute. For most multi-colour prints the purge waste is modest relative to the total filament used, though highly colour-varied models with many frequent switches will consume more.
The AMS Lite holds four standard 1 kg spools simultaneously. Filament runout detection monitors each spool and triggers an automatic swap to a backup spool if one runs out mid-print, provided a backup of the same filament is loaded. RFID readers on each slot automatically recognise Bambu Lab filament and sync the correct temperature and retraction settings in Bambu Studio, removing the need to manually enter filament parameters for supported spools.
A1 and A1 Mini Compatibility
The AMS Lite is exclusively compatible with the Bambu Lab A1 and Bambu Lab A1 Mini. It is not compatible with the P1S, P2S, X1, X2D, or H2 series printers, which use the standard AMS or AMS 2 Pro instead. Importantly, the A1 and A1 Mini each support a maximum of one AMS Lite connection, so four colours is the upper limit on these platforms. Users who need more than four colours, or who own a printer from outside the A-Series, should consider the standard AMS or AMS 2 Pro instead.
Both the A1 Combo and A1 Mini Combo include AMS Lite from the outset. Purchasing the standalone AMS Lite separately makes sense for users who already own a standalone A1 or A1 Mini and want to add multi-colour capability later.
Supported Filaments
The AMS Lite works with the same filaments as the A1 and A1 Mini: PLA, PETG, and TPU. Because these are open frame printers, engineering materials like ABS, ASA, and PA are not supported regardless of the AMS configuration. For multi-colour printing with PLA, the AMS Lite performs reliably. Flexible TPU can be more challenging to feed through any automatic material system due to its tendency to buckle in PTFE tubing; results vary depending on the TPU hardness and brand.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I add AMS Lite to an existing A1 or A1 Mini?
Yes. The standalone AMS Lite can be added to any A1 or A1 Mini at any time. It connects via the printer's dedicated AMS port and is recognised automatically in Bambu Studio once connected.
Is AMS Lite compatible with P1S or P2S printers?
No. AMS Lite is only compatible with the A1 and A1 Mini. P1S, P2S, X1, X2D, and H2 series printers use the standard AMS or AMS 2 Pro, which connect differently and are not interchangeable with AMS Lite.
How many colours can I print with AMS Lite?
AMS Lite holds four spools and supports up to four colours per print. The A1 and A1 Mini each support a maximum of one AMS Lite unit, so four is the hard limit on these platforms. If you need more colours, a P1S or P2S with multiple AMS or AMS 2 Pro units would be required.
Does AMS Lite dry filament like AMS 2 Pro?
No. AMS Lite does not have a built-in filament drying function. It stores filament in an open housing without active humidity control. If filament moisture is a concern — particularly for TPU or specialty PLA in humid environments — filament should be dried separately before loading. The AMS 2 Pro includes active drying at up to 65°C for users who need integrated filament drying.
Summary
