How to Clean Your Microwave

Quick and Easy Microwave Cleaning

Microwaves accumulate food splatters, grease, and odours faster than almost any other kitchen appliance. A dirty microwave can affect the taste of food heated inside it and in extreme cases can reduce efficiency. The good news is that microwaves are quick and easy to clean with the right method. This guide covers the most effective cleaning techniques for all types of microwaves.

How Often to Clean

  • Wipe after every use: A quick wipe prevents splatter from baking on
  • Deep clean weekly: Removes built-up grease and food residue
  • Turntable: Wash weekly in warm soapy water

The Steam Cleaning Method (Best for Baked-On Splatter)

This is the easiest and most effective method for a grimy microwave interior.

  1. Fill a microwave-safe bowl with 250 ml of water and add 2 tablespoons of white vinegar (or a few slices of lemon)
  2. Microwave on high for 3 to 5 minutes until the water boils vigorously and the interior is steamy
  3. Leave the door closed for a further 5 minutes to allow the steam to loosen baked-on food
  4. Carefully remove the bowl (it will be hot — use oven mitts)
  5. Remove the turntable and its support ring
  6. Wipe the interior with a damp cloth or sponge — loosened food wipes away easily
  7. Wash the turntable and ring in warm soapy water, dry, and return
  8. Wipe the door interior and the door seal

Cleaning the Turntable

The glass turntable is dishwasher safe on most models — check your manual to confirm. Alternatively, wash by hand in warm soapy water. Ensure the turntable and its plastic support ring are both dry and seated correctly before using the microwave again.

Cleaning the Exterior

Wipe the exterior with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Pay attention to the door handle, buttons, and the door frame where grease splatter accumulates. Avoid excess moisture around the control panel. For stainless steel exteriors, wipe in the direction of the grain and dry with a clean cloth to prevent streaking.

Removing Persistent Odours

If odours persist after cleaning, place a bowl of water with a tablespoon of baking soda in the microwave and heat for 2 to 3 minutes, then leave to sit for 30 minutes without opening the door. Alternatively, place a bowl of dry baking soda in the microwave overnight to absorb odours.

Cleaning a Built-In or Combination Microwave

The interior cleaning method is the same as for a countertop model. For built-in and combination microwaves with a grill function, pay particular attention to the grill element area — use a soft brush to remove any loose residue from the element after it has cooled completely. See our combination microwave guide for more on these models.

Tips for Keeping Your Microwave Clean

  • Cover food with a microwave-safe lid, splatter guard, or paper towel during heating to prevent splatters
  • Wipe the interior with a damp cloth immediately after any spill — when food is warm it takes 30 seconds to clean; when baked on it takes 30 minutes
  • Never use abrasive scrubbers on the interior — they can damage the waveguide cover (the cardboard-like panel on one wall) which protects the magnetron
  • If the waveguide cover is damaged, replace it before using the microwave — damaged covers can cause arcing and fire
