How to Choose the Right Fixed Rangehood

What Is a Fixed Rangehood?

A fixed rangehood (also called a fixed undercupboard rangehood) mounts in a permanent, stationary position underneath an overhead cabinet directly above the cooktop. Unlike a slideout rangehood that retracts into the cabinet when not in use, a fixed model is always visible below the cabinet. Fixed rangehoods are a practical, straightforward choice for kitchens where a permanently visible extraction unit is acceptable and simplicity of installation is valued.

This guide covers what to look for in a fixed rangehood. You can compare all rangehood types in our complete rangehood buying guide.

Fixed vs. Slideout Rangehoods

Fixed rangehoods are permanently visible beneath the overhead cabinet. Slideout rangehoods retract into the cabinet when not in use, keeping the kitchen looking cleaner when the rangehood is not needed. Fixed models are generally simpler to install and often available at lower price points than equivalent slideout models. If concealment when not cooking is important, a slideout is the better choice. If you want a straightforward, reliable extraction unit at a practical price, a fixed rangehood is a sound option.

Key Features to Look For

Width

Choose a rangehood that matches or slightly exceeds the width of your cooktop. Common widths are 60 cm (paired with a 60 cm cooktop) and 90 cm (paired with a 90 cm cooktop).

Airflow Rating (m³/hour)

The airflow rating indicates how much air the rangehood moves per hour at maximum extraction speed. For everyday cooking above an electric or induction cooktop, 400 to 600 m³/h is generally adequate. For gas cooktops, particularly those with a wok burner, aim for 600 m³/h or more. The higher the airflow, the more effective the extraction.

Ducted vs. Recirculating

A ducted rangehood vents extracted air outside via a duct through the wall or ceiling. This is the most effective option and is strongly recommended for gas cooktops. A recirculating rangehood filters air through grease and carbon filters and returns it to the kitchen. Recirculating is the only option where external ducting is not possible, such as in many apartments.

Fan Speed Settings

Look for at least two to three fan speed settings. Lower speeds handle everyday cooking quietly; higher speeds provide maximum extraction for heavy cooking sessions.

Noise Level

Fixed undercupboard rangehoods can be noisier than canopy models at equivalent airflow because of their compact fans. Check the decibel rating, particularly at medium speed, if the kitchen is open to a living area.

Filter Type

Stainless steel or aluminium mesh grease filters are standard. These are washable and reusable. For recirculating models, activated carbon filters also required and should be replaced every three to six months.

Lighting

Integrated LED lighting illuminates the cooktop below and is more energy efficient and longer-lasting than halogen alternatives.

What to Expect at Different Price Points

Budget (Under $200)

Entry-level fixed rangehoods provide basic extraction for light cooking above electric or ceramic cooktops.

Mid-Range ($200 to $500)

Mid-range fixed models offer better airflow, LED lighting, stainless steel mesh filters, and more speed settings. Most households will find an excellent model in this range.

Premium ($500 and Above)

Premium fixed rangehoods deliver higher airflow ratings, very low noise, touch controls, and refined stainless steel finishes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far below the cabinet should a fixed rangehood sit?

The rangehood should be mounted at the manufacturer-recommended height above the cooktop, typically 600 to 750 mm above an electric or induction cooktop and 750 to 900 mm above a gas cooktop. Check the installation guide for your specific model.

Can I install a fixed rangehood myself?

The physical mounting can often be completed by a competent DIYer following the manufacturer's guide. However, the electrical connection and any ducting work should be carried out by a licensed electrician and, where applicable, a licensed builder for wall penetrations.
