Steam Cleaners and Carpet Shampooers for Australian Homes
Steam cleaners and carpet shampooers go beyond what a vacuum can do, tackling built-up grime, bacteria, and stains on hard floors and carpet. At Everyday Home Living, we stock a range of steam mops, handheld steamers, and carpet spot cleaners suited to Australian homes, with fast delivery nationwide.
Steam Cleaners and Steam Mops
Steam cleaners use pressurised steam to lift and sanitise grime from hard surfaces without chemical cleaners. They are an excellent choice for tiled floors, grout lines, sealed timber, vinyl, and bathroom surfaces where bacteria and soap scum build up over time. The high temperature of the steam (typically 100 to 120 degrees Celsius) kills the majority of common household bacteria and dust mites on contact, making steam cleaning a genuinely hygienic cleaning method.
Steam Mops
Steam mops are upright steam cleaners designed specifically for floor surfaces. They work like a regular mop but generate steam rather than spreading water and chemical solution. A microfibre pad on the cleaning head absorbs loosened dirt as the steam penetrates the surface. Steam mops heat up quickly, typically in 20 to 30 seconds, and the reusable, washable pads keep ongoing costs low.
Handheld Steam Cleaners
Handheld steam cleaners are compact units that tackle above-floor surfaces including kitchen benchtops, bathroom tiles, oven interiors, grout, and upholstery. They are useful for spot cleaning and sanitising without chemicals, and many include a range of nozzle attachments for different surfaces and gaps.
Floor and Carpet Shampooers
Carpet shampooers (also called carpet cleaners or spot cleaners) inject a cleaning solution into carpet fibres and extract it along with loosened dirt using strong suction. They deliver a far deeper clean than a vacuum alone and are the best way to treat stains, odours, and general soil build-up in carpet and upholstered furniture. Spot cleaners are compact models designed for targeted stain treatment rather than whole-room cleaning.
Which Surfaces Can Steam Cleaners Be Used On
Steam cleaners are safe for most sealed hard surfaces including ceramic and porcelain tiles, sealed timber, vinyl, laminate (with caution), stainless steel, and glass. They are not suitable for unsealed timber, unsealed natural stone such as marble and travertine, or any surface where moisture could cause damage or warping. Always check your flooring or surface manufacturer's guidelines before using a steam cleaner. For carpet cleaning, use a dedicated carpet shampooer rather than a steam mop, as steam mops are not designed to extract liquid and can leave carpet too wet.
Steam Cleaning and Australian Hard Water
In many parts of Australia, particularly in Perth, Adelaide, and regional areas, tap water is high in mineral content (hard water). Using hard water in a steam cleaner accelerates limescale build-up inside the boiler, which reduces performance and can shorten the machine's life. Using distilled or demineralised water in your steam cleaner, or adding a descaling agent periodically as recommended by the manufacturer, will significantly extend its service life.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a steam cleaner on timber floors?
Steam cleaners can be used on sealed timber floors, but care is required. The steam must not be left in one spot for too long, and the cleaning pad should not be excessively wet. Unsealed or raw timber floors should never be steam cleaned as moisture will penetrate the wood and cause warping, swelling, or staining. If you are unsure whether your timber floor is sealed, check with your flooring installer or manufacturer before using a steam cleaner. For unsealed floors, a damp mop with a suitable timber floor cleaner is safer.
Do steam cleaners kill bacteria and dust mites?
Yes. Steam at temperatures above 70 degrees Celsius kills the majority of common household bacteria, and most steam cleaners operate at 100 to 120 degrees Celsius at the cleaning head. This is particularly useful in bathrooms, kitchens, and on mattresses where dust mites and bacteria accumulate. Steam cleaning does not replace regular vacuuming as it does not remove the physical debris that bacteria feed on, but it is an effective sanitising step after vacuuming and is chemical-free, which is an advantage in homes with children and pets.
What water should I use in my steam cleaner?
Distilled or demineralised water is the best choice for steam cleaners, particularly in parts of Australia with hard tap water such as Perth, Adelaide, and many regional areas. Hard water causes limescale build-up inside the boiler over time, reducing steam output and eventually damaging the heating element. If you use tap water, follow your manufacturer's descaling schedule to remove mineral deposits. Some manufacturers specify that only tap water should be used as some demineralised water can also cause issues with certain boiler materials, so always check your product manual.
Can a steam mop clean carpet?
Steam mops are not designed for carpet cleaning. They apply steam and a cleaning pad to the surface but do not have the suction to extract moisture from carpet fibres. Using a steam mop on carpet can leave it too wet, leading to mould or mildew growth in the underlay. For carpet cleaning and stain treatment, use a dedicated carpet shampooer or spot cleaner, which injects solution and extracts it with suction in a single pass.
Do steam cleaners come with an Australian warranty?
Yes. All steam cleaners and shampooers at Everyday Home Living include the manufacturer's Australian warranty. Contact our team if you need help with a warranty claim or product support.
