Home Theatre & Speakers

Home Theatre and Speakers for Australian Homes

A home theatre speaker system takes your audio from good to genuinely immersive. Where a soundbar delivers improved TV audio from a single cabinet, a dedicated multi-channel speaker system surrounds you with sound, placing dialogue, effects, and music precisely in the room around you. Home Theatre Configurations

5.1 Surround Sound

A 5.1 system is the standard home theatre configuration: five speakers (front left, centre, front right, rear left, rear right) plus one subwoofer. The centre channel handles the majority of dialogue in film and television mixes, keeping voices anchored to the screen. The rear channels place ambient effects and background sounds behind and to the sides of the listener, creating a sense of being inside the scene. For a dedicated home theatre or a large Australian living room, a 5.1 system delivers a genuine cinematic audio experience.

5.1.2 and Dolby Atmos Systems

Adding two height channels to a 5.1 system creates a 5.1.2 configuration capable of processing Dolby Atmos and DTS:X object-based audio. Height speakers can be physically mounted on the ceiling or, more practically, placed on top of the existing front speakers at an upward angle to reflect sound off the ceiling. For households that watch a lot of Dolby Atmos content and want the fullest possible audio experience, a Dolby Atmos-capable system is the natural choice.

Key Features to Look For

AV Receiver

The AV receiver is the hub of any home theatre system, decoding the audio signal, amplifying it, and distributing it to the speakers. Look for a receiver with the channel count to match your speaker configuration, HDMI 2.1 ports with eARC for 4K HDR passthrough and high-quality audio return from the TV, and support for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X decoding. Power output (measured in watts per channel) should be matched to the sensitivity of your chosen speakers.

Speaker Sensitivity and Impedance

Speaker sensitivity (measured in dB at 1W/1m) determines how loud a speaker plays from a given amount of amplifier power. Higher sensitivity speakers (90 dB and above) are easier to drive and pair well with modestly powered receivers. Speaker impedance (measured in ohms) must be compatible with the receiver's rated output. Most home theatre speakers are rated at 6 or 8 ohms, which suits the majority of AV receivers.

Subwoofer

The subwoofer handles low-frequency content below around 80Hz, which includes the deep bass in movie soundtracks, the kick drum in music, and the rumble of explosions and vehicles. A quality subwoofer with an active (powered) design is an essential part of any home theatre system. For larger Australian rooms, look for a subwoofer with a larger driver (12 inches and above) and sufficient amplifier power to pressurise the room at low frequencies.
