Built-in Microwave
Built-in Microwaves for Australian Kitchens
A built-in microwave is installed into kitchen cabinetry for a clean, integrated appearance that eliminates bench clutter and gives your kitchen a seamless, purposeful finish. If you are renovating a kitchen or want to upgrade from a countertop model without the visual impact on your benchtop, a built-in microwave is the right choice. Browse our range at Everyday Home Living with fast delivery across Australia.
How Built-in Microwaves Are Installed
Built-in microwaves are installed into a purpose-built or adapted cabinet opening, typically in a tower unit alongside a built-in oven or in a dedicated upper cabinet at a convenient working height. Each model requires a specific trim kit that surrounds the microwave door with a finished frame flush with the cabinet face. The trim kit is typically included with the microwave or available as an accessory. Installation requires a cabinetmaker or kitchen installer to prepare the opening to the manufacturer's specifications, and a licensed electrician to connect the power supply.
Built-in vs Countertop Microwaves
The primary advantage of a built-in microwave over a countertop model is aesthetic and practical: it frees up bench space, looks integrated with the kitchen design, and positions the microwave at a convenient height rather than on the bench. Performance-wise, built-in microwaves offer the same wattage, capacity, and feature options as countertop models. The trade-off is higher installation cost and less flexibility to relocate or replace the unit without cabinetry modifications.
Key Features to Look For
Capacity and Wattage
Built-in microwaves are available in capacities from around 25 to 40 litres to suit different household sizes. For a family of three to four, 28 to 32 litres is a practical size. Wattage typically ranges from 900W to 1,100W. Higher wattage delivers faster, more even results for everyday reheating and cooking.
Combination Functions
Some built-in models include combination microwave and grill, or microwave and convection (fan-forced) functions. A combination built-in model that also functions as a second oven is particularly useful in kitchens where oven capacity is limited. See our combination microwave ovens range for models with full oven functionality.
Trim Kit Compatibility
Always confirm that a compatible trim kit is available for your chosen model before purchasing. The trim kit must match the microwave model for a correct fit, and the finished cabinet opening dimensions must match the trim kit specifications. Check this carefully if you are retrofitting into an existing cabinet.
