How to Choose the Right Built-Under Dishwasher

What Is a Built-Under Dishwasher?
A built-under dishwasher (also called an integrated or underbench dishwasher) is installed permanently beneath the kitchen benchtop, either behind a matching cabinet door panel that conceals the appliance or with a visible stainless steel or door-coloured face. Built-under dishwashers are the standard choice for kitchen renovations and new builds, delivering a clean, integrated look where the dishwasher blends seamlessly into the cabinetry.

Fully Integrated vs Semi-Integrated
- Fully integrated: The dishwasher is completely hidden behind a custom cabinet door panel that matches the surrounding cabinetry. Controls are on the top edge of the door, visible only when the door is open. The most popular choice for high-end kitchen renovations where a seamless look is the goal.
- Semi-integrated: The dishwasher has a visible control panel on the front of the door, with only the lower portion hidden behind a door panel. Easier to operate without opening the door but slightly less discreet in appearance.
Key Features to Look For
Capacity (Place Settings)
Dishwasher capacity is measured in standard place settings. As a guide: 12 to 13 place settings suits up to four people; 14 to 15 place settings suits a family of four to six; 15 place settings and above suits larger households or those who entertain regularly. Look for flexible interior racking — adjustable upper baskets, foldable tines, and dedicated zones for large items — to maximise usable capacity for different load types.
Energy Star Rating
Under the Australian Energy Rating scheme, more stars means lower electricity running costs. Most current built-under dishwashers achieve 3.5 to 5.5 stars. Look for the highest rating available within your budget.
Water Efficiency (WELS)
The WELS scheme rates dishwashers on water consumption per cycle. More stars means less water used per wash. Current efficient models use 8 to 11 litres per cycle on the eco program. Check the per-cycle water consumption in the specifications for a realistic comparison between models.
Wash Programs
Look for programs covering: intensive (heavily soiled pots and pans), normal, eco (lower temperature and energy), quick (30 to 60 minutes for lightly soiled loads), delicate (glasses and fine china), and a rinse-only function. An auto or sensor program that adjusts water usage and temperature based on the soil level detected is a useful mid-range and premium feature.
Drying Method
- Heated drying: Uses a heating element at the base of the tub to evaporate moisture at the end of the wash. Effective but uses more energy.
- Condensation drying: Relies on the heat retained in the dishware and the cool stainless steel tub walls to condense moisture. More energy efficient but may leave more moisture on plastic items.
- Zeolite or fan-assisted drying: Premium drying methods that deliver excellent results with lower energy consumption.
- AirDry / AutoOpen: The dishwasher door opens slightly at the end of the cycle to release steam and allow air circulation, improving drying performance on all item types. Available on select models.
Noise Level
Built-under dishwashers are used in open-plan kitchens where noise matters. Look for models rated at 44 dB or below for quiet operation that won't interrupt conversation. Premium models can be as quiet as 38 to 42 dB.
Third Rack / Cutlery Drawer
A third drawer at the top of the dishwasher for cutlery and small utensils frees up the lower baskets for more plates and bowls, increasing usable capacity significantly. Available on mid-range and premium models.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a built-under dishwasher need a custom door panel?
Fully integrated models require a door panel that matches your cabinetry. This is typically supplied and fitted by your kitchen cabinetmaker. Semi-integrated models have a standard finished front panel and don't require a custom door.
How do I connect a built-under dishwasher?
A built-under dishwasher requires a cold water inlet connection, a drain connection (typically to the sink waste), and a power connection. The electrical connection must be performed by a licensed electrician in Australia.
