Personal/Bullet Blenders

A personal blender (often called a bullet blender) uses a small, individual-serve cup that screws onto the motor base upside down. The cup detaches and can be used directly as a drinking vessel. The trade-off is limited capacity, lower power, and limited suitability for hot liquids and large batch processing.

Immersion (Stick) Blenders

An immersion blender (also called a stick blender or hand blender) is a handheld device with a blending blade at the tip of a long shaft. You immerse the blade directly into the pot, jug, or bowl you're blending in, eliminating the need to transfer hot soups or sauces into a separate blender jug. They're space-efficient, easy to clean, and practical for soups, sauces, baby food, and whipping cream. They're less powerful than countertop models for tasks like crushing ice or making thick nut butters.

Motor Power

Blender motor power is measured in watts. Higher wattage means more blending power for tough tasks.

Noise

High-powered blenders can be very loud. Some premium models include a sound enclosure (a moulded cover that fits over the jug during blending) to reduce noise significantly. Worth considering if the kitchen is open to a living area or if blending happens early in the morning.

Ease of Cleaning

A self-clean function that blends warm water and dish soap inside the jug for 30 to 60 seconds is a very useful feature that makes cleaning quick and easy. Dishwasher-safe jugs and blades are also worth looking for.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I blend hot soup in a blender?

Yes, with care. Hot liquids expand when blended and can cause the lid to blow off. Fill the jug no more than half full with hot soup, hold the lid down firmly with a folded tea towel, start on the lowest speed, and vent the lid slightly if your model has a removable centre cap. Alternatively, use an immersion blender directly in the pot.

What's the difference between a blender and a food processor?

Blenders are designed for liquid-heavy tasks (smoothies, soups, sauces) and produce smooth, pourable results.
